Spotlight for the Month of May: Abdullahi Abubakar: Using Digital Storytelling to Drive Conversations That Matter

-

Some people work behind the scenes quietly shaping conversations that influence how society thinks, responds, and grows.

They may not always be the loudest voices online, but their work continues to create impact in ways many people do not immediately see.

For the month of May, Impact Lens is spotlighting Abdullahi Abubakar for his contribution to digital storytelling, advocacy communication, and social impact through media.

Abdullahi currently serves as the Communications Officer, Digital Media at Gender Mobile Initiative (GMI), a nonprofit organisation focused on preventing and responding to sexual and gender-based violence through advocacy, technology, research, and community-based interventions.

At Gender Mobile Initiative, he contributes to communication and digital advocacy efforts that help push conversations around gender justice, accountability, safer communities, and youth engagement into public spaces where they are often overlooked or ignored.

But beyond the title and organisation, what stands out is the role intentional communication plays in social change.

In today’s world, information moves quickly.
People scroll past stories.
Outrage comes and goes.
Important issues disappear from conversations within days.

Yet behind many impactful advocacy campaigns are communicators who consistently use storytelling to educate, inform, challenge systems, and keep difficult conversations alive.

That is part of what Abdullahi’s work represents.

Through digital campaigns, storytelling, and advocacy communication, his work reflects the growing importance of media professionals who understand that communication is not just about visibility, but also about influence and responsibility.

Gender Mobile Initiative itself has become known for its work around sexual harassment prevention, gender policy advocacy, survivor support systems, and safer learning environments across Nigeria. The organisation has contributed to national conversations around gender equity and institutional accountability.

As part of the communications team, Abdullahi contributes to amplifying these conversations and ensuring that important issues remain visible, relatable, and accessible to wider audiences.

In a feature published by Independent Newspaper during an International Women’s Day event organised in partnership with the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abdullahi spoke about creating platforms that encourage policy conversations and amplify the voices of young women advocating for reform.

What makes this important is that storytelling shapes culture.

The stories society repeats often become what people normalise.
The conversations people avoid often become the problems communities struggle to solve.

And this is why communicators matter.

Across Nigeria, conversations around gender-based violence, inclusion, safety, and social justice still face silence, misinformation, resistance, and stigma. Advocacy organisations continue to push for change, but communication remains one of the strongest tools for sustaining awareness and public engagement.

At Impact Lens, we believe impact is not only created by founders, policymakers, or public figures. Sometimes, impact is also created by the people behind the campaigns, the storytellers behind the movements, and the communicators helping shape narratives that influence society.

This spotlight celebrates Abdullahi Abubakar not just for his role in digital media, but for being part of a generation intentionally using communication as a tool for advocacy, awareness, and meaningful social change.
