The Women Empowerment Education and Peace Building Initiative (WEPBI) has formally launched the Pan-African Adolescent Girls Movement, an initiative of the Graça Machel Trust, marking a significant step toward strengthening leadership and development opportunities for adolescent girls across Nigeria.

The launch, held in Enugu State, concluded a three-day intensive workshop where 10 adolescent girls received training in public speaking, leadership, entrepreneurship, and other critical life skills. These participants will now serve as peer educators, returning to their communities to train and mentor other girls.

Speaking at the event, Joy Oguadimma, Executive Director of WEPBI and lead implementing partner for the Movement in Nigeria, described the initiative as “the birth of a transformative movement that places the voices of adolescent girls at the centre of Africa’s future.”

“Through our partnership with the Graça Machel Trust, we are equipping young girls with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to lead, innovate, and influence the decisions that shape their lives and communities,” she said. Oguadimma added that the Movement is expected to spark a new wave of leadership, resilience, and hope, ensuring that girls’ dreams are nurtured, protected, and realised.

Also speaking, Dalree Lange, Programme Manager at the Graça Machel Trust, reiterated the significance of the initiative, explaining that the Movement is grounded in the belief that “every teenage girl deserves a safe space to learn, lead, and raise her voice.” She noted that the initiative brings together young women, trained facilitators, and carefully selected local partners to create an enabling environment for girls to thrive.

WEPBI, a women-led organisation committed to advancing women’s leadership, promoting peace, and fostering inclusive development, said the Movement aligns with its mission to support girls and women as catalysts for change in their communities.

The Straight Child Foundation Enrolls 101 Children for Clubfoot Treatment, Strengthens Nationwide Intervention Efforts

0

The Straight Child Foundation (TSCF) has reported major progress in its nationwide clubfoot intervention programme, announcing that 101 children were successfully enrolled for treatment in October 2025.

The organisation, which currently operates 22 specialised clubfoot clinics across 11 states, revealed that the majority of newly enrolled beneficiaries were infants under twelve months, an age group that has the highest likelihood of full correction when treated promptly using the Ponseti method.

Speaking in Umuahia, Abia State, the Foundation’s CAST Coordinator, Mr. Uchenna Egbe-eni, reaffirmed TSCF’s commitment to improving mobility, independence, and long-term quality of life for children born with clubfoot. He highlighted that each child recorded an average of 4.7 casting visits before tenotomy, aligning with established global standards for Ponseti-based treatment.

He noted that more than 93% of the children progressed to the tenotomy phase, a critical stage for successful correction, underscoring the programme’s efficiency and adherence to best practices.

Egbe-eni also shared updated treatment retention statistics, stating that dropout rates were 3.8% among children undergoing casting and 6.4% among those in the bracing phase. He emphasized that while these numbers remain relatively low, the Foundation continues to intensify follow-up efforts to ensure each child completes the full corrective pathway.

As part of its continuous clinical improvement strategy, TSCF facilitated basic Ponseti technique training for health workers at the Edo State University Teaching Hospital, Auchi. In addition, a dedicated CAST training was conducted in Itumbuzo, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, to strengthen practitioner competence at community level.

To further improve data accuracy and service quality, supervisory and monitoring visits were carried out at several partner institutions, including:

  • University of Uyo Teaching Hospital
  • University of Calabar Teaching Hospital
  • Rhema University Teaching Hospital, Aba

Egbe-eni expressed profound appreciation to the Foundation’s long-standing partner, MiracleFeet Incorporated, for its unwavering support in expanding access to clubfoot services across Nigeria. He urged parents and caregivers to present children for treatment early, preferably within the first few weeks of life, to ensure the best outcomes.

He reaffirmed the organisation’s mission:
“Our goal is clear, every child born with clubfoot in Nigeria deserves timely, appropriate, and high-quality care. We remain committed to ensuring no child is left behind.”

Beyond the Classroom Foundation Launches Safer Girls Project to Fight Gender-Based Violence in Schools

The Beyond the Classroom Foundation (BTCF) has officially launched the Safer Girls Project, a focused training initiative under its IGNITE-funded Beyond Her Odds Initiative, aimed at equipping adolescent girls with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to understand, prevent, and respond to gender-based violence (GBV), both online and offline.

The program, which will reach over 200 girls across Bwari and Kabusa communities this November, comes at a time when BTCF has observed a worrying increase in incidents of GBV affecting adolescent girls, particularly digital harassment, cyberbullying, online grooming, and non-consensual sharing of intimate images. The foundation has noted that many girls are unaware of how to protect themselves online, leaving them vulnerable to both virtual and real-world abuse.

“We have seen firsthand how girls are exposed to physical, emotional, and digital forms of violence, sometimes even within spaces that should feel safe, like classrooms,” said Mrs. Raquel Kasham Daniel, Executive Director of BTCF. “In this era of Artificial Intelligence, the risks are even greater: AI-generated deepfakes, manipulated images, and online impersonation are new tools of abuse that girls must learn to navigate safely.”

Aligned with the 2025 UNiTE Campaign for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Safer Girls Workshop emphasizes that digital safety is central to gender equality. The workshop is designed for girls aged 11 to 16 and runs for 1 hour 30 minutes, combining interactive discussions, storytelling, and practical exercises to address online harassment, peer pressure, grooming, and offline abuse.

“Every girl deserves to be safe, in classrooms, at home, in her community, and online,” Mrs. Daniel added. “Through these workshops, we are helping girls identify warning signs, know their rights, and take practical steps to protect themselves while supporting others.”

Mrs. Mayowa Adegbile, Executive Director of Ashake Foundation, a partner in the initiative, highlighted the collective responsibility required to protect girls:

“Ending gender-based violence is not just a girl’s issue; it is a community responsibility. Programs like Safer Girls empower young women to recognize threats, speak up, and access help, ensuring that schools remain safe, supportive learning environments.”

Participating schools in Bwari and Kabusa will host the sessions, provide support for students, and be recognized as Safer Classroom Champions under BTCF’s Safer Girls Approach. This initiative also serves as a model for integrating digital safety education into schools, preparing girls to navigate a rapidly evolving technological landscape safely and confidently.

This activation is part of BTCF’s broader Beyond Her Odds Initiative, which focuses on empowering adolescent girls to rise above vulnerability and inequality through education, safety, and leadership development. By combining awareness, skills-building, and community engagement, BTCF is fostering a generation of girls who are informed, confident, and resilient.

“Women should be empowered, equipped, and recognized for their leadership. AWIEF celebrates these values beautifully,” she said.

Throughout the conference, participants engaged in interactive panel discussions, workshops, and exhibitions covering critical topics such as Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work, Mobilizing Capital for Women Entrepreneurs, Africa’s Green Transition, and Harnessing the AfCFTA for Intra-African Trade.

The sessions offered practical insights, mentorship, and business development strategies to help women strengthen their enterprises, expand into new markets, and contribute to the continent’s economic growth.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of AWIEF, Irene Ochem, reaffirmed the forum’s commitment to building an inclusive and innovative Africa driven by women entrepreneurs.

“Over the past 11 years, AWIEF has grown into one of Africa’s most influential platforms for women in business. We remain steadfast in our mission to break barriers, foster inclusion, and equip women with the tools to thrive despite challenges,” Ochem emphasized.

This year’s event recognized and appreciated the invaluable support of its partners, including OCP Africa (Diamond Sponsor), Deloitte Africa (Knowledge Partner), City of Cape Town (Host City), African Women Development Fund (AWDF), Nedbank, UNDP, UN Women, and MINT360 (Tech Partner). These partnerships, Ochem noted, reflect a shared vision for advancing women’s entrepreneurship, digital inclusion, and sustainable development across Africa.

The exhibition segment of the forum featured innovative products and services from women-led enterprises across the continent, fostering meaningful networking, investment connections, and opportunities for cross-border collaboration.

As AWIEF continues to expand its influence, the forum remains a beacon of hope and progress for African women entrepreneurs determined to break barriers, lead with purpose, and build a prosperous future for the continent.

Founded by Tolulope Makinwa, social enterprise leader and Executive Director of Muazu Africa, LAGI Network was created to address a critical challenge in Africa’s social innovation ecosystem, the widening gap between available impact jobs and the skilled talent needed to fill them.

“We’ve spent years helping changemakers find the right opportunities, and one truth keeps showing up: purpose alone doesn’t guarantee placement,” said Tolulope Makinwa, Founder of LAGI Network. “LAGI Network is where social impact work becomes structured, scalable, and sustainable.”

  • Recommend personalized learning, upskilling, and mentorship pathways.

By combining technology, human connection, and social purpose, LAGI Network aims to reduce Africa’s 45–60 day hiring cycle by half, improving access to verified talent for impact organizations while creating meaningful career pathways for changemakers.

The platform officially launches with a Breakfast Event in Lagos, themed “Local Action. Global Impact.”, bringing together development leaders, investors, and innovators shaping Africa’s social impact landscape. Early members will receive verified membership badges, exclusive access to the Private Talent Circle, and a complimentary copy of Tolulope Makinwa’s upcoming publication on purpose-driven leadership and systems change.
