African Women Entrepreneurs Inspired to Break Barriers at the 11th AWIEF Conference and Exhibition

-

Women entrepreneurs from across Africa have been inspired, equipped, and empowered at the 11th Africa Women Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum (AWIEF) Conference and Exhibition, held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) in Cape Town, South Africa.

The two-day event brought together a dynamic mix of women innovators, investors, policymakers, development partners, and business leaders under the theme “Breaking the Barriers: Now More Than Ever.” The conference served as a powerful platform for knowledge-sharing, networking, mentorship, and collaboration, all geared toward advancing women’s economic empowerment and leadership on the continent.

In her keynote address, Dr. Fatima Elsheikh, Secretary General of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), set an inspiring tone, urging women across Africa to be bold, visionary, and collaborative in driving innovation and sustainable growth.

“AWIEF is a platform that amplifies women’s leadership and innovation across Africa. It offers an incredible opportunity to connect, collaborate, and create lasting impact,” she said.

Also speaking at the event, South Africa’s Deputy Minister for Small Business Development, Jane Sithole, commended AWIEF for its consistent efforts in supporting women-led enterprises.

“This platform aligns with our mission to support small businesses and create sustainable opportunities for women. Empowered women build stronger economies,” Sithole stated.

Delegates were further inspired by Monique Shurray White, CEO of I.M.A.G.E.S. Media Group (USA), who delivered a passionate address urging women to embrace their creativity, confidence, and influence.

“Women should be empowered, equipped, and recognized for their leadership. AWIEF celebrates these values beautifully,” she said.

Throughout the conference, participants engaged in interactive panel discussions, workshops, and exhibitions covering critical topics such as Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work, Mobilizing Capital for Women Entrepreneurs, Africa’s Green Transition, and Harnessing the AfCFTA for Intra-African Trade.

The sessions offered practical insights, mentorship, and business development strategies to help women strengthen their enterprises, expand into new markets, and contribute to the continent’s economic growth.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of AWIEF, Irene Ochem, reaffirmed the forum’s commitment to building an inclusive and innovative Africa driven by women entrepreneurs.

“Over the past 11 years, AWIEF has grown into one of Africa’s most influential platforms for women in business. We remain steadfast in our mission to break barriers, foster inclusion, and equip women with the tools to thrive despite challenges,” Ochem emphasized.

This year’s event recognized and appreciated the invaluable support of its partners, including OCP Africa (Diamond Sponsor), Deloitte Africa (Knowledge Partner), City of Cape Town (Host City), African Women Development Fund (AWDF), Nedbank, UNDP, UN Women, and MINT360 (Tech Partner). These partnerships, Ochem noted, reflect a shared vision for advancing women’s entrepreneurship, digital inclusion, and sustainable development across Africa.

The exhibition segment of the forum featured innovative products and services from women-led enterprises across the continent, fostering meaningful networking, investment connections, and opportunities for cross-border collaboration.

As AWIEF continues to expand its influence, the forum remains a beacon of hope and progress for African women entrepreneurs determined to break barriers, lead with purpose, and build a prosperous future for the continent.
